UPCDOWNCLEFTCRIGHTCABC-START

In a lyrically sparse evening, They Came and Ate Us make their return to The Railway with an unprecedented fusion of ‘undead’, progressive punk and rock. The hazy, smoked filled room begins to pack out to witness the trio’s hefty guitar and the kind of drumming akin to gunshots. Every ounce of their energy is put into a performance of white noise and intricate musicianship that leaves your ears near comatosed.  They clearly have no need for a frontman, with the crowd completely engaged and busting some moves, their dark and extensive riffs fill any void whilst adding a lovely touch of absurdity.

UPCDOWNCLEFTCRIGHTABC+START are back in Winchester following their best release yet, 'Embers'- a chilling blend of heavy moments and melodic , experimental rock. Taking their name from the cheat for the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ video game, these guys have built up quite a following for their edgy tunes and plenty have turned out to watch the talented bunch perform.

There’s not a great deal of on-stage banter from the tame, Kent lads but it just leaves them free to concentrate on their music without succumbing to any pointless craziness. The set is often instrumental and flits from loud brutality to an almost orchestral mellowness, but still remains charismatic throughout the barrage of extended, post rock riffs. Once you get past the polite rock beats it’s quick to realise their music is soft enough to dance to, reminding you just how artistic they really are.

The night is nothing short of captivating and the guitar produced melodies help balance the ability to sound colossal, at the same time as incredibly delicate. A reserved group of musicians, but talented none the less.
