Review: Juliette Lewis @ Talking Heads
You’ve probably seen her erratic acting in the likes of Natural Born Killers or Kalifornia but if you haven’t yet seen her strutting her stuff on stage, then Talking Heads was the place to be. With a fresh band, versatile and well-matched, by the name of the New Romantiques, Juliette launched straight into a set of her renowned and energetic punk rock. The ultimate rock chick, she proceeds to make sweaty sexy, with plenty of furious songs that showcase her rough and raw vocals to grimy lyrics.
Clearly it’s a Juliette Lewis show; everyone’s absorbed by her flailing limbs, care free, dirty vocals and watching her perform is undoubtedly an unmissable experience. Making the audience feel defiant and rebellious is pretty much her specialty, and she wears it well throughout the night. The New Romantiques are the perfect side to Juliette’s filthily fun personality; they’re grimy, bassy and slide through punk-rock angst to blues to dance. It’s a flawless combination and, as a result, the Talking Heads becomes the dank and sweaty pit her music was made for. Thriving on getting people intimate, she was made for the stage, and her entertaining individuality as an actress is what makes her a great performer. Most would struggle to match her natural energy and participation, and tonight’s she’s definitely up for getting to know her Southampton crowd.
There’s plenty of new material but what everyone’s waiting for is ‘Hot Kiss’ for an impressive dose of the rough affection and animalistic behaviour she’s famous for. It’s messy, loud and full of hair flicks that culminate in an impressive blend of Joan Jett-style melody and snarl.
