Small Seeds – Tips for 2010
Yep, it’s that time of year when journalists and bloggers alike decide to write endless lists. Lists of the best of the year, lists of the best of the decade, lists of lists. We don’t believe in trying to swim against a prevailing tide, so we’re just going to go with it and present you with our 5 predictions for bands or artists that will be big in 2010.
Delphic
Appearing in many “ones to watch” lists already, and we’re not going to argue with any of them. Taking Balearic sounds to their inevitable conclusion, the Manchester 4 piece combine euphoric electronic with good old indie guitars. People haven’t been quite sure which box to put them in, leading to support slots with the likes of Orbital and Kasabian. They’ve also appeared on Later with Jools Holland, so they’re pretty much our one sure thing...

Again, this may be cheating slightly as Fuck Buttons album “Tarot Sport” was one of the best albums of 2009, and they have been around for a while, but we feel 2010 will be Fuck Buttons year. The duo of Andrew Hung and Ben Power deliver insane noisy electronica, which has been released by the All Tomorrow’s Parties label. They are pretty much the lovechild of the Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine.

A five piece in the vein of Maximo Park or The Futureheads, old school guitar based indie with pop tunes. Hailing from Manchester they found themselves signed to a German independent record label and released an album in February of 2009. However their pop savvy is likely to see them hitting the big time in 2010.

The Good Natured is not a band but one woman, Sarah McIntosh, and her keyboard. Just 18 years old, The Good Natured garnered a lot of buzz in 2009 for the track “Your body is a machine”, which fell somewhere between Editors, Goldfrapp and The Eurythmics. The ultimate sign of Miss McIntosh’s quality is that she has been signed to Rough Trade records.

The Drums
Our only U.S. band, The Drums hail from Brooklyn and attracted a lot of attention for their perfect slice of pop “Let’s Go Surfing”. Mixing elements of 80s Manc pop and 1950s girl groups (despite being all male) The Drums veer between perfect synth pop and Joy Divison style bleakness. They are playing as part of the NME tour in February so will be fully fledged indie pin ups by the end of 2010.
