review: The Watermelons – Better Together EP

Fruity. Zesty. Not everyone likes watermelons, but on this evidence they really should- everyone’s had a summer that sounded like this on reflection, haven’t they? Or maybe I’ve watched too many films…………there’s a certain haze in the air all of a sudden.

And it isn’t hard to see why.  Brighton’s The Watermelons are easily contenders to join dream-pop’s new wave (if someone will be so kind as to sign them to a label as quickly as possible). It’s nigh-on impossible not to love this if you have even the smallest of soft spots for Animal Collective, Beach House and the like.

The Watermelons

Even if you don’t, you may well do after this should you give it a chance- it feels short but makes up for it by being really rather sweet, from What You Want to the closing title track. Take its advice- hit the beach, find a girl and you really could be better together, as has been the stock in trade of summer romances since time immemorial- cinematic or otherwise.

Why not let heart rule head for a while- check out www.thewatermelons.com and petition your nearest local label to sign them up before the last rays of sun fade?
