Review: Green Day – ¡Uno!

Green-Day-UNOI’ve had a love/hate relationship with Green Day over the last 20 years. The 16 year old me discovering Kerplunk, and playing 2000 Light Years Away on repeat for about a year. And in those 20 years progression is not a word that Green Day have had any understanding of.

Saying that, their lack of understanding has been a winning formula for them, and instead of churning out their brand of immature pop/punk to the same fans for 20 years, they keep their demographic quite clearly at the angst ridden teens coming to terms with their adolescence.

Their latest instalment ¡Uno!, is yet again doing exactly that. If you were a Green Day fan 5, 10 or even 20 years ago, forget about it, you’re going to hate it… Just relive your teenage years by whacking on Kerplunk, Dookie, Nimrod, American Idiot or whatever came out when you were 16, it’s going to sound exactly the same and not fill you with hate that this band have not aged a day, and neither has their music. This is as close as you’re ever going to come to witnessing stasis.

I’m not going to break the album down track by track. They all sound like American Idiot with slightly different rhythms and different lyrics, albeit about the same subject of growing up in suburban USA, such a hard life!!!?!

The 16 old me would love this album. But kids, remember this album is being performed by 40 year olds, so no calling me an oldie!
