review: Shotaway – Northern Lies EP

If you’ve got the blues, get a Shotaway. The answer to the question ‘ if Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and/or Howlin’ Wolf were around today and picked up electric guitars, what would it sound like?’ has just fallen into our laps, and indeed ears.

Northern Lies serves up a modern answer to anything on King Of The Delta Blues Singers, say, or Moanin’ In The MoonlightGambler’s Technique setting the pace on a funereal dirge on the seedier side of life, the title track and Nightwalker setting the scene for a bluesier take on subject matter also explored by the Police on Roxannebefore a trip down Runaway Lane brings a long walk through the dark of winter to an end.

For best results, don headphones and a tattered bluesy suit, possibly topped off with a battered hat, and walk moodily down your local high street with a battered old guitar on your back telling any kindly soul who’ll listen how you woke up diz mawnin ( as it’s pronounced in these matters), and your woman’s done you wrong. You may get the odd bit of loose change, and even a cup of tea.

If a slow walk towards a city that never sleeps doesn’t appeal though, listen to people who’ve made the journey and survived, they’re one of the most excited new bands around right now:

  1. Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf did play electric guitars for the majority of their careers.

  2. Shotaway are one of those bands that take you to a place that not many artists can do these days. Exciting to watch live but also one to lose yourself with your headphones on too. If you haven’t seen them live yet, I suggest you get this on your ‘to do list’…you will not be disappointed!
